Red Rock Points #1
Artist
Phil Chadwick
Medium
Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
This is the view while standing in the shelter of Killarney Light looking toward the west. I was standing on one of the Red Rock points with many others in the distance.
The wind was howling and I had to tie my easel down to the Killarney Light and the lightning cables leading to the communications tower. Even then, the wind blew my easel over into a pool of water that I was straddling. Suddenly, my oil painting had become a water colour work. The wind was probably gusting to 35 knots and kept blowing my palette into my body. My shirt had a positive impression of my palette. It was a struggle to even get the brush to the canvas which was also billowing in the wind. Debris blowing in the wind, stuck to the fresh oil paint. It was exhausting work but I hoped that somehow the beauty of the scene would get …along with the debris.Plein air painting is hard work.
I wanted to capture the wind in the oil and my hope was that being out in the wind would allow me to do so.
