Description
After painting the "spruce wall" as recorded in #0780 "During the Storm" I set up again a little further to the west after the winter storm had mostly subsided. This is looking toward the southwest from the south end of the barn. It was still overcast with light snow falling but there was also some brightness penetrating the clouds. This told me there was no organized and thick cloud above. The sky was just compsed of turbulent stratocumulus but with enough depth (say 3000 feet) for snow flake growth. The temperature had fallen to minus three under the cold air advection associated with the westerly winds.
We had a good 15 to 20 centimetres of heavy and wet snow. Only the snow that fell later on Sunday was was dry and light enough to be lifted and drifted by the strong westerly winds. However the wind and the blowing snow was enough to force me into the tractor bay of the barn in order to record this portion of the winter storm. The blowing snow was sticking into the wet oil and making it very granular kind of like oatmeal oil paint. I liked the grains in the paint but the easel was in a danger of blowing over and the buffeting wind was ... distracting. I retreated after getting this painting on the canvas.
