Description
Around 1 pm I happened to look outside to the north and was swept up by the colours and wind dynamics of the turbulent stratocumulus. The blustery northwest winds were stirring up some interesting colours that were more reminiscent of fall than mid August. The cumulus tops had a naples yellow tint while the lifted condensation level was the typical dark purple associated with turbulent stratocumulus. These are the colours that one normally sees in the fall with cool Arctic outbreaks. Indeed this was a cool Arctic outbreak and it was just unusual to happen in mid August. Jo-Boo curled around my feet and kept me close company. I couldn't do my normal pacing back and forth.
The dark colours of the cloud bases indicated that there was enough moisture in the air mass to support showers should the instability be sufficient. From the billowing, cauliflower look of the cumulus tops, the instability was certainly present and it was just a matter of time before the precipitation. The POP today was less than 30% and we will certainly have showers while yesterday with the cold front, the POP was 80% and there wasn't even a drop of rain. The computer models must be annoying anyone who uses the forecast in this drought situation. The forecast was really quite horrible.
