Description
This is number fifteen in the Canoe Lake Paddle as numbered along the path of the paddle. This is only 30 seconds of paddling to the east of #1849 "Calm Canoe Lake Reflections" . As a rough estimate, this point is just a couple of strokes or maybe twenty feet of water.
I believe the little cove is on the north side of Little Wapomeo Island. Time and memory makes me a bit uncertain. The leaning tree caught my eye and I felt I could be bold with a composition. The paint, trees and water all had to have a flow and rhythm.
The feel of the painting is a strong function of the smooth but textured surface, the bold strokes and the aging oils. I was still working with the original palette of paint from several weeks before. I was just adding new pigments as I needed them. Waste not, want not...
I used a lot of paint on this small and very slippery surface. I simply laid the oils in and tried to leave them alone - continued stroking of the paint would turn the oils into mud. I scratched my signature into the wet paint with a tooth-pick.
