Description
I took the pontoon boat to the bay on the southwestern edge of Long Reach. The light winds drifted me in the correct direction. The moving platform did work and I even listened to tunes on the boat radio. It was almost like I was in the studio.
The characteristic bank of cloud on the western horizon told the weather story. This sharp leading line was the forward edge of the warm conveyor belt of moist air advancing from the Gulf of Mexico. The sharp cloud edge is formed through deformation zone processes and the relative winds within the atmosphere when you subtract out the overall eastward translation of all of the air masses. These patterns evolve from the subtle relative motions within the atmosphere. It is like watching patterns evolve within a passenger car on a train. They make sense are easy to explain from within the car but from a person beside the tracks, the relative motions are overwhelmed by the motion of the train. These subtle patterns that form within the atmosphere are the key to understanding the individual weather patterns over periods of a few hours. The jet stream path is like the train on the track and is best used to understand the larger scale weather over the course of a week or so. You can take these facts to the bank...
