Description
This is number thirty-two of forty-six in the Canoe Lake Paddle as numbered along the path of the paddle. I had bumped into a couple of other Tom Thomson enthusiasts that I knew. Together we were going to visit Mowat Cemetery. The Canoe Lake Paddle had evolved into a stroll.
We beached our canoes at the culvert on the access road so as to be respectful of the cottage properties. Strolling southward from the culvert, the village of Mowat would have been on the east or Canoe Lake side of the road. The post 1922 location of Mowat Lodge would have been straight eastward on the shore of Canoe Lake. We turned west off the road onto a path that was barely a game trail. The path into Mowat Cemetery was well trodden but certainly unmarked and that is what I recorded in this painting. The forest has grown to erase most of the traces of the Gilmour Lumber Company. In the time of Tom Thomson Canoe Lake was clearly visible from Mowat Cemetery. There were no trees to block the view right down the length of the lake.
The feel of the painting is a strong function of the smooth but textured surface, the bold strokes and the aging oils. I was still working with the original palette of paint from several weeks before. Some of the oils were getting gooey. I was just adding new pigments as I needed them. Waste not, want not... I used a lot of paint on this small and very slippery surface. I simply laid the oils in and tried to leave them alone - continued stroking of the paint would turn the oils into mud. I scratched my signature into the wet paint with a tooth-pick.
