Description
Cold lows used to be just a spring event when a large upper trough would form over the eastern portions of North America. Now with the weakening jet stream, these challenging weather patterns have shifted more into June. The air mass in the cold trough is unstable due to the colder temperatures aloft. Daytime heating is required to ignite the instability which is focused along radials rotating around the cold low very much like spokes on a wheel. Along a spoke, showers and thunderstorms are likely during the afternoon and early evening. Between the spokes the sun is tends to appear and the optimistic might think that the rain is over for the day. The forecast must be very flexible with a cold low since the conditions vary so wildly.
The sun was just coming up in the eastern horizon and I liked the milky colour to the west. A few locations to the west were actually seeing the sun through the mainly overcast layer of cold air mass stratocumulus. Seventy-two years ago, the allied landing craft were on their way to the beaches of France and destiny in one form or another.
