Description
It was a beautiful fall day with brisk northerly winds. The winds were cool but the sun was warm. The painting experience reminded me of having ice cream with hot fudge topping. There was no way that an artist could lose. I decided to practice what I preach and paint on the back hill with the sun on the scene, the canvas and my back - it felt great. The turbulent stratocumulus were the obvious inspiration. These clouds lift a great deal of moisture through the chaotic interaction of the wind with the terrain. This turbulence takes moisture from the wet soils and lift them chaotically to the lifted condensation level and thus the base of the clouds. There was soma thermal lift as well but a close examination of the cloud bases revealed a lot of turbulence and an uneven base. The wind also increased with height resulting in some Kelvin-Helmholtz curls on the cloud tops. The painting went terrific with a great match of the shapes and colours.
A painting or two of turbulence stratocumulus in September is getting to be a bit of a series with me. As a result, I had to add the year to the title in order to tell them apart.
