Description
The sun had not yet risen enough to illuminate the shoreline of Singleton Lake. Northwesterly turbulent winds had kept the stratocumulus alive overnight. The clouds were definitely front lit thus revealing the location of the unseen sun. Some of the stratocumulus were old and grey. The tops of the young stratocumulus were much whiter as they skidded along with the wind. I painted the late afternoon sky of this same day in #1900 "Late Afternoon Glow". This however was the view from the Singleton Lake front yard at 5:38 am Monday June 6th, 2016 (The Anniversary of D-Day).The skies had clouded over considerably during the day with the advance of the next weather system.
Code named Operation 'Overlord', the Allied landings on the Normandy beaches June 6, 1944 paved the way for our freedom. D-Day was the largest amphibious invasion in history. More than 160,000 Allied troops invaded Western Europe, overwhelming German forces in an operation that proved to be a turning point in World War II. My Dad would go ashore on June 7th, 1944 and although he did not talk about the war, he did mentioned that he didn't get his boots wet.
