Description
I stood in the same spot that AJ Casson would have stood in 1929. The village street was more of a highway and was certainly much busier than it was 87 years before. Motorcycles roared by and cars revved their engines although I could see no reason to do so. Heavy machinery was working on the recently vacated lot just south (to the right) of the General Store. Apparently the construction had undermined the foundation of the General Store and it basically crumbled several feet and was in danger of a full scale collapse. There was a public outcry and numerous jack-posts sprouted to temporarily brace the structure up again.
The foreman of the construction came over to see what I was doing. He liked it and we visited for 15 minutes or so. I had lost of visitors in fact... Many nameless people walked behind the easel to see what I was up to. One chap asked "how much". I told him what a 14x18 sold for and he said "really?" with a quite incredulous tone in his voice. He smiled and walked on - A friend was listening to this exchange and after he left she unloaded about how much she did not like those kind of people who wanted art for basically free and did not value the talent of the efforts of the artist.
Kleinburg might well be the wedding photo capital of the area. There were at least five separate bridal parties lined up and posing in front of the older buildings and sites of the village. One group lined up in the shade of the blue building as I painted. The arrangement of people in fancy clothing was more like a firing squad than a happy wedding.
I could see the thunderstorms developing to the north as I painted. I was able to easily complete the painting before the first deluge. After the drive from Brockville and two other paintings combined with the hub-bub of the city., I was literally done and called it a day. The thunderstorms arrived twenty minutes later but I had everything safely in the car.
