Description
This is number thirty-five out of forty-six in the Canoe Lake Paddle as numbered along the path of the paddle. No one else was at Tom's Cairn although the signs and well used trail revealed that lots and lots of people visit the site. This was Tom's favourite camping site and typically where he pitched his tent on his first visit to Canoe Lake in the spring. Tom's artist friends James E. H. MacDonald (May 12, 1873 – November 26, 1932) and John W. Beatty (1869–1941) were assisted by area residents and erected this memorial cairn at Hayhurst Point in September 1917. MacDonald composed the text for the plaque. Tom's patron Dr. James MacCallum paid the expenses.
The cairn was in good shape in October 2016 although some of the mortar needed re-pointing. There were no missing rocks as far as I could tell.
My paintings do not normally include signs or people. "Signs" by the Five Man Electrical Band kind of sums it up for me. When I paint in the studio, I listen to the stereo - loud. I have weeks of music that plays randomly. I never know if classical, country or Christmas music will play next. It doesn't matter anyway if I am in the zone. When I was finishing "Thomson Cairn" Sarah McLauglin's "Angel" played with the classic line "... may you find some comfort here...". "Angel" is about another artist who died before their time. Perhaps the timing of the song told me to step away from the easel. It was done.
