Description
This is number twenty in the Canoe Lake Paddle as numbered along the path of the paddle. I paddled northward in front of the series of cottages along the shore in front of Mowat. According to the official survey, these cottages lie in Concession 12 of Peck Township, Ontario. This is the Trainor cottage. I am told that it hasn't changed much from the time of Tom Thomson. The front porch was still there. If only the walls could talk, I think they would solve the mystery of what really happened. Out of respect for the current property owners, I did not linger as I paddled by. I paused just long enough to get some material for this painting.
The feel of the painting is a strong function of the smooth but textured surface, the bold strokes and the aging oils. I was still working with the original palette of paint from several weeks before. Some of the oils were getting gooey. I was just adding new pigments as I needed them. Waste not, want not... I used a lot of paint on this small and very slippery surface. I simply laid the oils in and tried to leave them alone - continued stroking of the paint would turn the oils into mud. I scratched my signature into the wet paint with a tooth-pick.
