Description
This is number thirty-six out of forty-six in the Canoe Lake Paddle as numbered along the path of the paddle. This painting and scene could be almost anywhere along the shores of Canoe Lake. However I was headed northward into the small bay opposite Camp Ahmek. Clearly the water levels of Canoe Lake have experienced some very large variations over the years. The lines on these ancient stumps reveal the storylines of the past. These stumps are probably more than a hundred years old - maybe older. By the way, water is the most important natural resource that Canada possesses - not oil.
"Ahmek" as after the Ojibwa name meaning "Great Beaver", was also the Ojibwa name Taylor Statten selected for himself. The chance meeting between Taylor Statten and Canoe Lake occurred in 1912 while on a family vacation in Algonquin Park. One never knows where a chance meeting might lead if you are prepared to tke a chance.
Taylor Statten was a Boer War (1899-1902 between Britain and the South African Boers) veteran and in 1906 became the full-time Boy's Work Secretary for the national YMCA. In this position Taylor established the Canadian Standards Efficiency Training Program that rewarded children "for the development of their intellectual, social, physical, and religious skills". These skills cannot be found in an "iLife" from some kind of flashing screen full of engaging colours and sounds. An "apple" is meant to be a nutritious and healthy meal and not something that promotes a couch potato vegetable. This is intended as humour. Don't be offended...
Of course there are many more "weapons of mass distraction" like TV sports, talk programs and "reality" shows. The world is full of artificial communication in a sea of signals but people don't normally talk anymore. Seldom does anyone even listen. Of course these are just my own, curmudgeonly and probably outdated opinions. But maybe we need to revisit the healthy and interactive concepts of Taylor Statten. I actually pondered these thoughts as I gently stroked my canoe in the quiet waters around the front yard of Camp Ahmek.

Enjoying your gallery and learning a lot from your palettes...so fresh and rich and true to nature. Love this pattern and composition...one that really shows off your unique style, colors and brushwork and seemingly effortless expression of the intricacy of the wilderness, and the simplicity at the same time. Amazing! l/f
