Description
I painted the original log barn on the Singleton homestead. This 15x30 foot or so structure probably dates back to around 1850 when the land was originally given to the Tye family by the Crown. The barn is surrounded by deep and rich soil hemmed in by northeast to southwest rolls of what looks like crystalline granite. This rock is marble and the ridges are the roots of the ancient mountains that predated the ice ages. The valleys between the ridges were the only place to plant a crop and so they built their barn and probably their home, right in the middle - after felling the trees used to build their homes. There is a one milking stall inside the barn with a cow head lever-lock controlled from where the back end of the cow by a remote control rope.
It was a beautiful sunny day with light southerly winds and temperatures just below freezing. It did get chilly when the wind picked up but the sun on my back was wonderful. There were also no bugs.
Nuthatches and squirrels were chattering away as they searched for food. I flushed a couple of ruffed grouse or maybe one, twice. The grouse all look the same to me. A mature bald eagle flew by - probably the same one I have seen before at the property. He flew off toward Charleston Lake.
