Artist's Description

This is the view across the entrance to St. John's Harbour at "The Battery". The Battery sits on the entrance to the harbour located on the slopes of Signal Hill. Sometimes described as an outport within the city of St. John's. This small, close-knit fishing community was very colourful on a sunny Newfoundland day. The colours of the homes is what drew me to this landscape. The streets are as steep as "Hello". One has to use a combination of "gas" and "brake" to keep going where you want. The homes of the Battery were built by fishermen but are now being up-scaled and are much in demand.

This hillside is responsible for St John's reigning as the leading Canadian city for avalanche deaths. Every few years a slide of snow and ice crashed down the hillside and takes out a shed or home or something along with the people inside.
