Another strong image - great stuff!!

Phil Chadwick replied:

Thank you Richard. I think I prefer the small panel to the larger 3x4 footer. That's the way it goes I guess. One has time to think during those bigger canvases and thinking can be over-rated :>))

Artist's Description

This is number thirty in the Canoe Lake Paddle as numbered along the path of the paddle. I was paddling around the point of land separating Potter Creek from Joe Lake. The white birches were busting into colour. The soft maples were the red fires just up from the edge of the water. There was also some ancient Canadian shield showing along the shoreline as well as the typical stumps and dead head logs. I try to inject the feel of theplace without recording every twig.

The feel of the painting is a strong function of the smooth but textured surface, the bold strokes and the aging oils. I was still working with the original palette of paint from several weeks before. Some of the oils were getting gooey. I was just adding new pigments as I needed them. Waste not, want not... I used a lot of paint on this small and very slippery surface. I simply laid the oils in and tried to leave them alone - continued stroking of the paint would turn the oils into mud. I scratched my signature...

About Phil Chadwick

Phil Chadwick

I paint outside - nothing between my eyes and the inspiration. That special connectivity gets into the pigments and you quickly realize that we are all stewards of the land, privileged to appreciate its beauty during our lifetime but responsible for leaving the environment better off for the future and all inhabitants... Phil was born and raised along the St. Lawrence of Ontario, Canada and studied at Queens University as a nuclear physicist. A meteorologist for Environment Canada for 35 years, Phil specializes in severe weather and training. Remote sensing is his forte - you might want to see a tornado before you die... but not just before you die! He has farmed, raised bees, written books and articles, lectured and instructed...
