Description
Cold lows used to be just a spring event when a large upper trough would form over the eastern portions of North America. Now with the weakening jet stream, these challenging weather patterns have shifted more into June. The air mass in the cold trough is unstable due to the colder temperatures aloft. Daytime heating is required to fully ignite the instability which is focused along radials rotating around the cold low like spokes on a wheel. Along a spoke, showers and thunderstorms are likely during the afternoon and early evening. Between the spokes the sun is likely to appear and the optimistic weather observer might think that the rain is over for the day. The forecast must be very flexible with a cold low since the conditions vary so wildly.
The sun had been up a couple of hours but the patches of altocumulus that I painted were still capped under a nocturnal inversion. The cloud elements were packaged like eggs in a carton or like the cells in a honey comb. Some banding in the pattern indicated a degree of rotation within the layer and the inevitable deformation zones. I didn't worry any more about the meteorology. I have worked many cold lows during my career so I needed to concentrate on my painting instead.
