Description
A summer frontal zone was sprawled southwest to northeast along the St Lawrence River. A flow of moisture was being pumped off the Gulf of Mexico. A series of short-waves were rippling along this front triggering convection in the unstable air mass. Most of these thunderstorms stayed to the south and the Singleton Lake area received nary a drop of precipitation.
This view is from 05:51 in the morning on Friday July 29th, 2016 looking toward the northeast from the front door. The colours were changing by the second and I had to be fast. The stratocumulus and cumulus clouds were being converted into fractions of their initial shelves very quickly due to turbulent mixing with parcels of drier air. There were some gravity waves present in the very shallow, sloped warm frontal surface. The cloud was able to survive a bit long in the crests of these waves. The clouds including the high level cirrus fingers were all gone by mid morning. The drought continued.
There are a lot of potential characters in these cloud shapes. Enjoy!
