Description
This is looking west from the beach at the base of Morpeth Street. It was 9 pm and the path of fire across the water lated only minutes but long enough for me to match the colours and sketch it in. To quote a Jimmy Buffett/Bruce Cockburn song "... sunset is an angel weeping, holding out a bloody sword.." The northeastward directed anvil of a distant thunderstorm focused the sword.
The cold frontal cloud mentioned during the earlier painting sessions was now on the western horizon. The winds were light and the water was calm. The cold front was responsible for the spectacular sky. There were only a few others on the beach to enjoy the silent fireworks.
The diagnosis of this as a cold front and thunderstorm was confirmed by the arrival of the gust front around 10 pm that evening. The winds were dead calm and then all of a sudden under a minimum of cloud, the winds gusted to 20 knots and then subsided after 30 minutes. Isn't the natural world inspiring!
I had taken a few hours to paddle completely around Chantry Island. It was an amazing afternoon and an even better evening.
It was still quite hot. Relief and probably some severe thunderstorms were on the way. As it turned out we didn't get any thunder at Southampton but they did inland.
