Description
A bit of time to spend behind the barn... It was cold... but fun!
Artists paint light. Shadows are the absence of light. Both are important -the stronger the light, the stronger the shadow. When light encounters a surface it must either be reflected or absorbed. The colour and the type of surface determines just how. Light that reflects off a smooth surface bounces at the same angle at which it strikes the surface. A pebbly surface will reflect light at the microscopic angles of the smaller and uneven reflecting surfaces.
The reflected light is the colour we see that defines the subject – local colour. The shadowed portion of the object will still have the same local colour but cooler and darker. Now for the important maxim for painters - colours look brightest when they are brought into contrast with their complementary colours – their opposite on the colour wheel. So in painting the local colour include some highlights of the warm complement just to add that sparkle. For the cool shadows a shade of blue is a good place to start but include some lowlights of the cool complementary colour as well.
Of course when you are outside painting, keep all of this in the back of your mind. More importantly, respond to your subject, have fun and paint the light as you see it.
