Description
I was up and painting very early on the last morning of the CPAWS Dumoine River Art Camp - it was the August Holiday Monday. Forest meteorology was a favourite subject of mine. Things that appeared very simple were really quite complex. Fog rising off the forest canopy is an example of such a process. It had rained overnight and both the forest and the ground were saturated. The rising sun and the ecology of the forest turned some of this moisture into fog. One must be up early to witness this fog phenomenon.
My friend Robert Genn used the word "klag" to describe the fog rising off the evergreen rain forests of British Columbia. 'Klag at Quatsino Sound' is such an example of his use of this word.
When one looks for this word through the dictionaries a very different meaning appears. Klag Noun: A strong, hangover inducing, low quality and/or otherwise disgusting alcoholic beverage. A slightly different spelling that sounds the same yeilds a different meaning all toegther. Definition of clag from the British : a clot or lump especially of dirt or snow. In Australian English a clag is a type of glue.
I decided to call what I observed as "forest fog". It was safer than calling it "klag". Robert would have chuckled. I did not sign this small and very rough surface on the front so as to not take away from the art.
