Artist's Description

This is another of the 30,000 Islands reputed to be found in the Parry Sound area. I certainly have my work cut out for me. It is a very good thing that I quite enjoy painting scenic trees and rock. I certainly like the flagged nature of the trees that endure the strong and sometimes hurricane force onshore winds. In the fall of the year, there is a meteorological phenomenon that I watched for. The weather pattern was very conducive to damaging onshore winds off Georgian Bay. Just in the wake of a fall cold front, the boundary layer is kept especially unstable because of the warm waters of the bay. There would sometimes be a small area south of a rapidly moving low pressure area that would have extremely strong winds. Some people called it the descending "sting jet" pattern but it boiled down to careful examination of the patterns and being alert. It was challenging to forecast the exact location of the damaging winds but one could give much longer watch lead time for the larger threat...

About Phil Chadwick

Phil Chadwick

I paint outside - nothing between my eyes and the inspiration. That special connectivity gets into the pigments and you quickly realize that we are all stewards of the land, privileged to appreciate its beauty during our lifetime but responsible for leaving the environment better off for the future and all inhabitants... Phil was born and raised along the St. Lawrence of Ontario, Canada and studied at Queens University as a nuclear physicist. A meteorologist for Environment Canada for 35 years, Phil specializes in severe weather and training. Remote sensing is his forte - you might want to see a tornado before you die... but not just before you die! He has farmed, raised bees, written books and articles, lectured and instructed...
