Description
The first week of August was a scorcher. The temperatures were in the thirties every day and there was not a whole lot of cloud in the sky - except for first thing in the morning.
This patch of altocumulus was to the northeast shortly after sunrise. The shallow and unorganized warm front that I suspect was focussing this patchwork cloud would have been a challenge to find on any surface analysis. Typically such a front was not worth finding even if you could locate it. The strong summer sun would soon destroy any evidence of its existence. There were some gravity waves in this cloud pattern and since the cloud was higher in the atmosphere in the seven to eight thousand foot range, that was the only real clue of a stable warm frontal surface. In any event, it would be very unlikely to rain and the drought would continue.
I painted on the rough side of a thick masonite panel. I liked the effect of the paint on the coarse grain even though it was very tough on my brushes. I could almost hear the bristles complain as the scraped along the abrasive weave of the panel.
