Description
The entrance to Jim Day Rapids from Singleton Lake was completely open but the ice shelf along the shore was still clinging to life. The walking was a bit treacherous but I was careful as a carried my field easel.
I selected this scene to practice looking into the water at small angles of incidence. Refraction of light dominates when you are looking downward into the water at small angles of incidence. In this case you can clearly see to bottom. The colours change with depth though and this was the challenge. The position of the features also are distorted but in this case, that didn't really matter. No one is likely to complain or find any errors.
As you look at ever increasing angles of incidence, reflection quickly dominates refraction. One sees whatever is reflected from the water surface with the constraint that the angle of reflection must equal the angle of incidence or in this case, the viewing angle. The proportion of reflected shoreline increases as you increase the angle of incidence measured from the vertical perpendicular to the water - in other words you are looking along or parallel to the water surface.
