Description
These are the pines on Flossie Island - just one of the thirty thousand or so islands that help to make the Parry Sound area so very special. There are reputed to be more than 30,000 islands and maybe that is correct. I never counted them. These islands along the eastern Georgian Bay coast are the largest freshwater archipelago in the world and a designated World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. Having the name painted in large white letters on the rocky point was a clear indication of just which island among the thirty thousand I was painting.
The prevailing wind direction is easily detected by a just a quick glance at the flagged pines on good, old Flossie. The persistent onshore winds are sometimes hurricane force. The trees learn to bend rather than break. There was a deck of low turbulent stratocumulus well to the east over the mainland. Heating over the land was important to get this cloud going as it was clear over Georgian Bay.
This is based on a smaller canvas that I liked a lot #1685 "Flossie".
