Description
An active cold front had crossed Singleton Lake the previous night. Brisk northwesterly winds had stirred up the thunderstorm precipitation into streets of turbulent stratocumulus. There were white caps on Singleton Lake. It was a windy day and bands of showers swept periodically across the lake. These cold low patterns used to be much more common in May but they have now shifted to June. I strongly suspect the root cause is the weaker jet stream and the larger, high amplitude upper ridge and trough patterns that now prevail. The upper trough over eastern Canada is the home of the cold low. The bands of instability and showers are like spokes on a wheel spinning around the central hub of the cold low.
I always think of the D-Day Allied landing on the beaches of France that occurred on this date in 1944. My father Nelson, went ashore on June 7th and said he didn't even get his boots wet. It would have been a brutal and anxious period of history. What might have happened had they not succeeded on that sunrise 72 years ago?
