Description
I wanted to continue painting with the participants of the Southampton Art School Annual Adventure. This is an afternoon sun view of the eastern entrance to Killarney Channel. The cirrostratus on the southeastern horizon is from a storm that actually missed us! I feel that demonstrations are sometimes the best instruction that motivates the participants to try it for themselves.
In this painting, the focus was certainly the white pine struggling to make a life on the rocks. The banding of the distant deformation zone and the drought lines etched on the rocks of Killarney Channel were parallel partners in the composition. The shocking jabs of red colour were really there but maybe not quite so large or bright. I wanted to illustrate that "jewels" of pure colour in a painting can be both fun and beautiful ways to cap off the art. I typically only do one or three jewels in a painting and sometimes they are rather small and even unobtrusive.
