Description
In #1902 "Sunrise Cloud Streets" I painted the sunrise stratocumulus streets of this very same day. This was the view from the Singleton Lake front yard at 17:15 pm Monday June 6th, 2016 (The Anniversary of D-Day). Although the winds were still northwesterly, the layered clouds of a low pressure system had filled the sky from the west. The late afternoon sun was just a glow through the overcast skies.
Code named Operation 'Overlord', the Allied landings on the Normandy beaches June 6, 1944 paved the way for our freedom. D-Day was the largest amphibious invasion in history. More than 160,000 Allied troops invaded Western Europe, overwhelming German forces in an operation that proved to be a turning point in World War II. My Dad would go ashore on June 7th, 1944 and although he did not talk about the war, he did mentioned that he didn't get his boots wet.
