Artist's Description

This scene could only be painted. A camera would miss the “point” of the hairpin, so to speak. A hairpin turn (also hairpin bend, hairpin corner, etc.) is named for its resemblance to a hairpin or bobby pin with a bend with a very acute inner angle. Such turns in trails may be called switchbacks.
I was standing on the next granite ridge down from that where I painted #1014 “Lyn Trickles”. I was able to include the falls as well as the downstream portion of the river within one painting - something beyond the range of a camera. The swirl of foam in the pool at the base of the falls is the spring portion of the hairpin. There is actually a “backward s” deformation zone in the pattern. This type of deformation zone is typically found in regions of cyclonic rotation. Some ash trees on the far side of the falls had already turned yellow.

About Phil Chadwick

Phil Chadwick

I paint outside - nothing between my eyes and the inspiration. That special connectivity gets into the pigments and you quickly realize that we are all stewards of the land, privileged to appreciate its beauty during our lifetime but responsible for leaving the environment better off for the future and all inhabitants... Phil was born and raised along the St. Lawrence of Ontario, Canada and studied at Queens University as a nuclear physicist. A meteorologist for Environment Canada for 35 years, Phil specializes in severe weather and training. Remote sensing is his forte - you might want to see a tornado before you die... but not just before you die! He has farmed, raised bees, written books and articles, lectured and instructed...
