Description
This is the view paddling southward back to the iconic McCrae Lake put-in. The perspective was looking south toward the two possible landing places. The portage was only a lift of 100 metres or so walk from the car park to the water's edge. The portage trail leads directly south from the steeper sand beach on the right side of the painting which was the preferred put-in. The other access in the middle of the painting was lower and muddier with some tricky, slippery planks that were supposed to make it easier to load or off-load a canoe. I didn't worry about either access preferring to get my old running shoes wet rather than risk scratching my almost new Kevlar canoe.
I had always liked this view and felt inspired. This is an extremely busy canoeing location now compared to the mid 1980's when I frequented those waters with the kids. There was no car park and the access was down a rather steep lane from Highway 69. There are typically scores of cars parked along a paved access lane now. I used to pack out a couple of garbage bags of stuff. I hope the current campers are more environmentally aware.
I actually painted this outside on the front hill of Watershed Farm using elements from the sky and the surrounding trees to augment the photo. The cumulus fractus were real clouds in the southern afternoon sky.
