Description
The thunderstorm in the center of this painting produced penny sized hail. Large hail is typical of early season thunderstorms. We had talked precisely of this threat at the Weather Centre earlier in the day. These cells didnt have enough CAPE (convective available potential energy) for an overshooting top but the updraft was still vigourous and showing signs of back building. The cool air mass also would not melt the hail stones as much as is typical in the mid summer. I was standing on the back hill at 5:30 pm looking southwest and the thunderstorms were tracking east-southeast.
In the middle of the summer, the penny thunderstorms wouldnt get much attention from the severe weather meteorologist as they would be small and not organized or intense. I am certain that there was no warning out for them but there was a watch issued. I am not certain which came first; the watch or the weather. Too bad.
My good friend had this to add... Awesome sketch! This storm also had at least one funnel cloud reported with it and caused lots of local flooding in the Hamilton - Burlington - Milton to KW and Guelph areas."
