Description
The best way to not over-work a painting is to start a new canvas. I was beginning to "dab" on #1884 "Little Wapomeo" and was in danger of hurting rather than helping the final result. It was time to set "Little Wapomeo" aside - at least for a while.
The snow virga was wafting down into a layer of abruptly slower northwesterly winds. Snow does not need much cloud thickness to grow. Snow only falls at about one metre per second so that any wind shear in the quasi-horizontal layers of the atmosphere are readily apparent. This September snow in the northwesterly winds sublimated long before it reached the ground. Of course the same apparent disappearance of the snow can be explained by it melting into rain which falls ten times faster than snow. This increased fall speed drastically reduces the density of the hydrometeor per unit volume making the rain almost impossible to see anyway - until you feel it on your face.
The sunset colours also reveals some gravity waves perpendicular to the northwesterly air mass winds. The sky always has something interesting to say. We just need to slow down and pay attention.
I painted this same sky on a rough panel in #1813 "Sunset Virga Trails". It was a different painting day and a canvas surface and so, of course, the results are also different.
