Description
Around 3:30 pm Wednesday, January 1st, 2007 I headed out to paint the sky. I had all the home computers busy doing calculations so I was free. From the back hill I could still monitor the running software. If the screens went black then my error checking code wasn’t perfect. I could see the screens through the computer room window while standing at my field easel. The screens stayed busy while I painted. Performance measurement was an important project which could change how we communicated and verified weather information in time and space and in full consideration of lead time.
I coined the phrase “Prairie Schooner” for a slow moving “Alberta Clipper”. These low pressure areas have potential to drop more precipitation but with the record temperatures, there was nil precipitation and no lake effect with the system at all. All we had were the strong winds with the low and some altocumulus with the low that was passing by to the north. That track of the low kept the farm under sun and strong southwesterly winds all day.
I stood on the back hill looking north-northeast. I didn’t include the new white building that the neighbours had erected for their horses. I was attracted by the dark altocumulus and the gravity waves in the pattern. The cloud moved northeast of the farm during the painting.
