Description
I headed to the back hill around 9:30 am Wednesday, September 20th, 2006. The blustery northwesterly winds lined up streets of stratocumulus and the sky was very interesting indeed. When I got to the top of the hill I had to work fast because there were well developed towering cumulus embedded in these streets. A cold shower were just a matter of time. One was aimed right for the back hill with a heavy, wet and darn cold rain shower. The liquid is actually melted snow flakes so you know it is cold! This instability is formed in the same process as snow squalls. This explains the name I selected for the painting. I had just enough time to lay the sketch in and then I had to retreat. My hat blew off and I caught my easel just as it blew over. I had not taken the time to "screw-driver" the easel to the ground. I made it back to the house just as the cold shower hit.
The public forecast really under-played the "passing showers". Like snow squalls, if these rain squalls line up on your location, they can last hours. The numerical guidance routinely miss these events and so do our new SCRIBE driven forecasts.
