Description
I was canoeing on Long Reach in the clearing behind a cold front. The high cirrostratus cloud were the last vestiges of the cold front. Meanwhile the chillier northwesterly winds in the cold air mass were beginning to have their impact. Streets of turbulent stratocumulus clouds were developing as the subsidence in the wake of the cold front subsided - so to speak. The sun was still high enough in the sky to give daytime heating and generate the low cumulus. These cumulus clouds align themselves along the wind direction in helical bands that nest together in wind parallel streets in the earth's boundary layer.
There is a bit of cloud iridescence in the higher cirrostratus. The occurrence of colours in a cloud similar to those seen in oil films on puddles, and is similar to irisation. The colors are usually pastel, but can be very vivid. Iridescence is generally produced near the sun, with the sun's glare masking it, so it is more easily seen by hiding the sun behind a tree or building. Other aids are dark glasses, or observing the sky reflected in a convex mirror or in a pool of water. Iridescent clouds are a diffraction phenomenon cause by small water droplets or small ice crystals individually scattering light. Larger ice crystals produce halos, which are a refraction phenomena rather than iridescence. Iridescence should similarly be distinguished from the refraction in larger raindrops that makes a rainbow. If parts of clouds have small droplets or crystals of similar size, their cumulative effect is seen as colors. The cloud must be optically thin, so that most rays encounter only a single droplet. Iridescence is therefore mostly seen at cloud edges or in semi-transparent clouds, and newly forming clouds produce the brightest and most colorful iridescence.
The view southwest along Long Reach was toward the marsh and the series of small streams and ponds that link together to drain Grippen Lake. Apparently you can canoe this route but it is no fun unless you enjoy climbing beaver dams every 30 feet. It is difficult to find the path on Google Earth.
If you look closely the path can be found. It measures 6.75 km as the bird flies from the deep water of Grippen Lake to the deep water of Long Reach. However, the stream meanders at a bout a 45 degree angle or more to the path of the bird so the real canoe distance is more than twice that long or maybe 15 km. If one adds in the beaver dams and other obstacles, it would be a journey. The title is meant to be humourous as if somehow one could reach to Grippen Lake from the painting location...
