Description
The Schomberg land-mark...just look for the orange grain elevator ... you can't miss it! This oil painting was based the on charcoal sketch #0146 "Schomberg, Fall '85". Schomberg Supplies was purchased by Leonard Bishop in 1959. Len had been a miller in Nobleton for the previous 9 years, until that mill burnt down. Schomberg Supplies had been used as a truck garage prior to 1959. In the next couple of years Len bought two "mobile mills" and went out to the local farms to do their milling. In 1963, he started building the "Orange Landmark" that still stands today. At the time, Len's elevators, milling equipment and machinery, technique and knowledge were state of the art. He cleaned seed for farmers within a 50 square radius and was pretty much the only miller around.
Len kept expanding Schomberg Supplies. A Dominion Hardware store was added to cater to the agricultural community. Schomberg Supplies was growing fast and changing with the marketplace. A License Bureau was installed in Schomberg Supplies in the late 60's and was there until the mid 1980's. This proved to be a great boon and draw for Schomberg Supplies and a great convenience for the community. In 1978 to 1979 Len retired and handed the reins over to his son, Bruce. Bruce operated the Mill successfully until 1996, when it was sold to the Crocombe family. The Orange Mill has been a landmark for travelers since its creation-whether by road or air. Toronto's Malton (and now Lester B Pearson) International Airport has used the Orange Elevator as a marker for one of their runways for years.
We have great memories of Schomberg and the many friends that we made there. Times may change but the memories flood back with the painting.

Beautiful work! I'll have to look for it the next time I am near Schomberg.
Phil Chadwick replied:
Thank you Andrew! That view is looking west-southwest along Highway 9 just west of the intersection with Highway 27. Back then, both of those roads were quiet. The painting dates from 1985.
