Description
I headed out for a Sunday morning kayak paddle to Lyndhurst Lake. There was a bit of wind but force does not catch the low riding kayak.
This view is looking to the west-southwest across the broad expanse of Singleton Lake. The banding of the cirrus was parallel to the warm frontal surface that was draped south of the lower Great Lakes. Heat and moisture from the Gulf of Mexico were on the way for later in the week. The weak, summer jet stream surely was located on the north side of the highest band of cirrus that I painted. The cirrocumulus clouds were confined to the north and the cold side of the jet stream. Note the increased amount of banding further to the west. These gravity waves in the cirrus indicated that the instability of the air on the cold side of the jet was transitioning to a more stable profile further to the west. This could only mean that the strongest winds along the jet stream were located at this transitioning point and almost directly over Singleton Lake. Technically these are called jet streaks within the overall jet stream. The clouds have quite a story to tell if we only take the time to slow down and to listen. This reminded me of my many conversations with Dr James Moore from COMET who constructed a most excellent conceptual model of the jet streak.
I painted on the rough side of a thick masonite panel. I liked the effect of the paint on the coarse grain even though it was very tough on my brushes.
