Description
My bride wanted a portrait of our Long Reach Lane with snow and shadows and trees. I thought that I should do a few small ones before committing to a much larger canvas. I went for a stroll in the twenty centimetres of powdery snow looking for possible candidates for this adventure. An Alberta Clipper crossed southern Ontario with a swath of snow. Snowfall warnings were not issued. In reality, this was a Prairie Schooner which is a slower Clipper. Due to interactions with the Great Lakes and the further deepening of the low pressure centre associated with increased thermal advections, warning criteria snowfalls are almost a certainty with Prairie Schooners. Numerical models tend to miss these events as well since they have their roots in the boundary layer.
This is the view looking southwest from the bend in Long Reach Lane where the road is really quite narrow and the tree tunnel effect most pronounced. Those are my tracks in the snow. Snow was clinging to the bark of many of the trees. The forest of the tree tunnel is comprised mainly of oaks, maples and large beeches.
I painted this on a very smooth and slippery surface using lots of oil.

The twisted tree adds a frigid edge to a cold flowing winter's path! The dance of warm tones carries the eye back and forth through the tunnel of snow and trees. Nicely done Phil!
