Description
I had the opportunity to do some plein air painting in the Limberlost Wilderness Preserve. One soft maple in particular really stood out on the far, northeastern shore of Buck Lake. I didn't even move my easel after completing #1819 "True Colours". It was an advantage to paint something that was quite far away. The details of the foliage were indiscernible so I was able to focus solely on shape and colour. It was fun.
This soft maple was a "red maple". Red maples produce red flowers in the spring. In the fall they reveal their bright, vivid red leaves. The undersides of the leaves can sometime be slightly whitish. The leave edges are toothed or serrated like a little saw. Red maple trees usually prefer wet soil or mildly drained soil like on the shore of Buck Lake.
