Description
A spring-time version of a winter storm was approaching from the west. The col of the deformation zone was lined up to pass to the north of Singleton Lake so the snow accumulation in this katabatic portion of the warm front was not going to amount to much. However any snow at this time of year tends to bother people and meteorologists tend to go into hiding - as if they could actually change the weather.
I was intrigued by the several layers of cloud and the gravity waves within each of these layers. Altocumulus and altostratus were the predominant cloud types. Snow virga could be seen on the western horizon. The radar showed that the snow had already arrived but of course that snow and the height of the radar bean were certainly a few kilometres above the ground. The snow was sublimating away before it could reach terra firma and me.
The painting shows how the clouds looked from the ground while the water vapour imagery gives a fair idea of how they appear from space. You have now officially seen clouds from both sides.
The houses to the left are on Fairfax Road while the farm house to the right was west of Russell Road. Each of these dwelling was just a stab of pigment.
A little spring bug landed on the canvas as I was painting. Earlier, another bug had done the same but it became hopelessly entangled in the oils and I blended it. I offered the tip of my brush to this second bug. Whether they are really thinking or just opportunistic, I do not know - but this bug took my offering and was saved.
