Description
This is number sixteen in the Canoe Lake Paddle as numbered along the path of the paddle. This is only one minutes of paddling to the south of #1850 "Leaning Tree Bay". As a rough estimate, this point is two or maybe three strokes which converts to twenty feet of water. In this Canoe Lake series on small and slippery panels, I am trying to channel the sense of place and freedom I felt in my canoe. I did not slave over these brush strokes. They were shear joy of expression. I want to keep this same energy in the larger pieces.
This point of land is the southern tip of Little Wapomeo Island. The distant land is the western shore of Canoe Lake. I always enjoy painting trees silhouetted by the sky and weather. Every tree is an individual. The waters of Canoe Lake were slightly rippled again. The gentle breeze was certainly precocious.
The feel of the painting is a strong function of the smooth but textured surface, the bold strokes and the aging oils. I was still working with the original palette of paint from several weeks before. I was just adding new pigments as I needed them. Waste not, want not... I used a lot of paint on this small and very slippery surface. I simply laid the oils in and tried to leave them alone - continued stroking of the paint would turn the oils into mud. I scratched my signature into the wet paint with a tooth-pick.
