Description
I was up very early on the last morning of the CPAWS Dumoine River Art Camp - it was the August Holiday Monday. I was even up before the sun. The predawn light was changing fast. Shallow fog was over the lake and draining down current with the overnight valley breezes. When the sun peeked over the eastern horizon I was blinded and had to look away. The colours and light were changing by the minute and I could not afford being blinded by the bright glare of the rising sun. The patchy altocumulus and cirrus were not enough to shield my eyes from the August sun.
The fog was not yet rising from the forest canopy. My friend Robert Genn used the word "klag" to describe such fog rising off the evergreen rain forests of British Columbia. Robert might have made that word up as a search through the dictionaries reveals a very different meaning. Klag Noun: A strong, hangover inducing, low quality and/or otherwise disgusting alcoholic beverage. A slightly different spelling that sounds the same yields a different meaning all together. Definition of clag from the British : a clot or lump especially of dirt or snow. In Australian English a clag is a type of glue.
The lake was quiet save for the call of the merlin that was apparently living and hunting nearby.
