Description
This is the view across the entrance to St. John's Harbour at "The Battery". This small, close-knit fishing community was very colourful on a sunny Newfoundland day. The colours of the homes is what drew me to this landscape. The streets are very steep. One has to use a combination of gas and brake to keep going where you want. The homes of the Battery were built by fishermen but are now being upscaled as the area has become fashionable and is close to the downtown of St. John's.
This hillside is responsible for St John's reigning as the leading Canadian city for avalanche deaths. Every few years a slide of snow and ice crashed down the hillside and takes out a shed or home or something along with the people inside.
The ever present fog was encroaching with the southeast breeze on the other side of Signal Hill. In June, the combination of warm air masses and a frigid ocean meant ideal conditions for advection fog. The fog was always nearby the coast and quite spectacular to watch.
See 0896 "The Sun of The Battery" for a 24x30 inch version of this sketch.
We had one of the best meals ever in St John's on George Street.
