Description
It was very windy for sure but the temperature was plus 8 Celsius so wind chill was not a factor. I had been painting too much in the studio so I decided to head out to the water front. The wind buffeted the palette and easel and sometimes it was a challenge to even control the brush. I was hoping that the elements would help to create the atmosphere for this painting. There would be no over-working the brush strokes in these winds gusting to 35 knots or better.
Streets of turbulent stratocumulus were surging from the southwest. The cold front was still over Lake Huron but the gradient was intense. Four of the eight heavy "Singleton Chairs" blew over backwards. Another chair blew over just after I finished the painting. Weather can be a real lion in the month of March and this wind was the roar. The surface of Singleton Lake was stirred into a sea of white caps - all except the west basin which was still a layer of bathing-suit ice. If you wanted to skate on that ice, you had better be wearing your bathing suit. I think there were gusts to 40 knots or more.
I painted the evening version of this sky again in #1896 "Howling Cold Front" (5:30 pm) and #1899 "Beware the Ides" (6:20 pm). Even though the sun is not visible in this painting, the backlit cloud reveals its location.
