Description
This view is of the Saugeen River at Southampton in 1890 looking eastward up river. The weather warning flags were on the hill to the right.
The United States used coloured flags. A red sun on a white flag would mean higher temperatures. A yellow flag over a blue flag would mean local rain and steady temperatures. A white flag over a yellow flag would mean fair and warmer.
The "Drum" or Cautionary Storm-Signal Station Network for Mariners was so successful beginning in the late 19th Century that it continued until after the Second World War.
I painted the baskets for fair and warmer weather ... although the baskets were intended only for gales and wind direction ... at least I intended to make the forecast an accurate one. I painted the sky condition as almost overcast stratus with no higher clouds. It is morning and the fog has just burnt off the outer edges and proceeding to burn off inward. The winds are light southerly indicating that they are in a warm and moist air mass probably in the fall of the year when fog is most common and the waters of Lake Huron are still warm. Of course, I am making all of this up.
I used to fish the Saugeen for speckle and rainbow trout until the fishing pressure got to high. If a fish can survive these days with all of the difficulties they face, more power to them and I help when I can. Note that the Ojibway term for confluence of the waters is "Saugeen".
