Description
I wanted to do another sketch from "Thunderhead" by Tom Thomson. The colours of my first sketch where a bit mire intense than Tom's. My brushwork was also heavier. This sketch is intended to be softer and more subtle on the colours.
How long does it take to create a masterpiece? Before you read further, I don't have the answer to that question! But I do get asked a lot about how long I think it took Tom Thomson to paint his plein air work like "Thunderhead". One experiment I have completed is to see how long it would take me to paint a similar work. I would have to imagine the time pressure that Tom must have been feeling - plus the concern of the approaching tornado. That is pretty much impossible to do but I tried to imagine the exhilaration and the many forces at play. It was an experiment after-all and better than simply guessing.
The first attempt was #0886 "Thomson's Thunderhead" as mentioned. The oils flew and I was done in 43 minutes. My lines were harder and the palette was darker than Tom's. Not too bad but I wondered if I could I go faster.
The second attempt was this one #0887 "Tom's Tornado". It was off the easel in 35 minutes. I brightened my palette but the lines were still hard.
It is well documented that Tom Thomson and his friends who would later form the Group of Seven finished their plein air art in between 15 and 45 minutes. Their plein air work sparkled and was certainly a labour of passion while not being over-worked. The pressures of changing light, weather and perhaps the biting insects encourages plein air artists to work fast and true.
Any plein air work that I do takes my current years of practice at painting plus 2 hours so for me in 2016, that is close to fifty three years for me.

Thank you Sunny! This is a Tom Thomson composition and I was experimenting how fast he might have completed his version with a tornado nearby... FAST... Us artists are all in this adventure together :>) Stay safe.
