Description
Around 3:00 PM on Sunday, January 7th, 2007 I started to head out to the back hill but wound up wandering around trying to find something to paint. I ended up on the front hill instead and was inspired by the way the light and clouds were poking through the pines and spruces. These white spruce were planted by George Craib and myself in April 1993. He had more trees than he had land for and he graciously landed on the steps of the old farm house with his tree planter and a bag of trees. The white spruce were all in the ground within a couple of hours. This is what almost fourteen years of growth looks like on a tree that was barely 10 inches in total length back in 1993.
The bluebird house is one that my Dad built and it gets used every year. We have more blue birds now than ever and once they were rare. Build it and they will come. I have about 200 bird houses on the property now. I built the predator cone and it is essential for the safety of the birds.
My hands got cold but the painting was pretty much done by the time the light got to the twilight stage. It was finished on the hill except for signing my name and fixing the hole in the bird house.
The title is a laconic, extreme under-statement regarding the size of the trees. This is a strongly environmentally "themed" painting. The trees do indeed grow and recapture some of the carbon that has been released back into the atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels. In the end, all energy comes from the sun and the sun is fueling the trees which will become fossil fuels in the future. The cycle of consuming the fossil fuels must be broken.
