Description
I have always liked this finger of marble poking into the west basin of Singleton Lake. There is an extensive sand beach just south of this point and I was out scouting to see how the bass were doing on their spring beds. The bass start nesting when the water temperature reaches 15 degrees Celsius. This temperature is typically achieved in June. The warm water supports the rapid development of the eggs and 2000 or so bass can hatch out in four to ten days. If a June storm or a cold low should turn the waters cold again then the nest and eggs are lost. The male bass defends the nest from predators and are easy targets for any type of bait dragged across the nest. When the male is taken off the nest for a photo opportunity and fisherman selfie, sunfish clean up the 2000 eggs in under two minutes of feeding frenzy. There is a reason for keep the bass fishery closed until late June.
On this particular paddle and from what I had witnessed, the bass beds had unfortunately already experienced very heavy fishing pressure. The bass beds were empty. The beds had been unoccupied all spring in fact. This years crop of bass was lost and three years hence, the fishermen would complain that the fishing would be very poor indeed.
The dominant white cedar on the point would have been much older than it looked. The marble rock does not offer many nutrients supporting fast and vigorous growth. This white cedar could in fact be hundreds of years old. Who knows?
