Description
I enjoy iris flowers. They are convoluted and twisted and extremely colourful. These were wild plants on the eastern shore of the almost island located in the southwestern corner of Singleton Lake. I was paddling on Sunday morning June 19th, 2016 and was quite surprised to see them on the edge of the shoreline.
I am not a botanist by any means but apparently this is a Blue Flag Iris, Scientific Name: Iris versicolor. Other common names for this flower are blue wild iris, American fleur-de-lis and water flag. The Blue Flag Iris is our most widespread native iris. It is found from southern Manitoba eastward into the Atlantic provinces. It grows in wet areas of woods and meadows and along shorelines of lakes, rivers and ponds — to the delight of cottagers and canoeists.
Although the rhizomes of blue flag are highly toxic, Aboriginal people have used the plant to alleviate a wide variety of ailments, including vomiting and constipation. The leaves have also been used for weaving baskets and mats
The story goes that the original Mr Singleton who the lake is named after, had a boat house on this point of land. Twice a day he would row his boat across to Squaw Point where he would find and milk his cows. This distance is about .7 of a kilometre or just under a half mile. He would return by the row boat with two pails of milk. Mr SIngleton made a lot of trips across this lake and it is only fitting that it be named after one of the original and hard-working pioneers.
