Artist's Description

This is the second demonstration piece for the second week of teaching at the Southampton Art School. This is looking southwest toward Port Elgin. The cold front came through around 1:15 pm and was a wimp! But I love painting the weather.

It was actually a split front as the wind shifted to the west aloft well before the surface cold front came through. Gravity waves in the high level altocumulus were the clue for the upper level westerly winds. The low level winds were light easterly blowing into the frontal trough. The surface cold front followed by about 45 minutes. The wind shift and cooler air mass were very noticeable. Lower level altocumulus were being stirred with drier air in the cold air mass and were becoming altocumulus fractus. There were some anvils along the cold front to the south when the front came onshore. The line of anvils in the painting parallels the Huron shore.

I think we had one drop of rain which is remarkably pitiful give that we had been...
